Whitby Guide

Welcome to Whitby

With everything from pristine beaches to historic sights and dazzling arcade games, Whitby truly offers something for everyone. For those enjoying Whitby for the first time, we recommend heading over to the Visitor Centre – just a few minutes away from our cottages – to hear all about local attractions and upcoming events in the town.

Heading for a swim? You’re in luck – both Whitby and Sandsend have the top ‘Blue Flag’ rated beaches for cleanliness and safety. There are miles of beaches for you to enjoy and relax on.

Whitby offers many short coastal trips out to sea – including a lovely sunset trip on the ‘Esk Belle’. If fishing is your thing, you can easily hire a fishing boat and tackle for a day in the North Sea – or if you’d prefer to stay on land, join the fishermen on the pier.

For history lovers, no trip to Whitby is complete without a visit to the Abbey, perched above the town, as well as the Captain Cook Museum.

Food and drink in Whitby

A trip to Whitby wouldn’t be complete without some world famous Fish and Chips. Whitby’s most famous chippy – The Magpie Café – is top of our list. On the other side of the harbour, you’ll find Fortunes Kippers – a traditional smokehouse founded in 1872. For more upscale dining, Whitby has a range of restaurants and cafés to suit all tastes.

Getting Here

By Car
Whitby is easy to reach by car, and the drive into the town is beautiful. From the North, you’ll enter Whitby on the A171 – the road that runs down from Scarborough. From the South, you’ll take the A64 and A169 from Malton, before joining the A171 after Staithes. Parking in Whitby can be a challenge – but luckily, our cottages all have a private reserved parking space.

By Bus
Whitby can be reached by bus – with buses running up and down the coast. Read more on the Arriva Bus website.

By Train
Northern Rail run trains to and from Whitby Train Station – just a couple of minutes walk from our cottages. For a special, unforgettable and scenic option, ride the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on a historic steam train. And even if you don’t take the stream train – you’ll get a great view of it from our cottages.
